What Happens During a Wonderloves Newborn Session | Tunbridge Wells Newborn Photographer
A newborn to a photography session can feel like a big thing in those early weeks.
You’re navigating feeds, little sleep, changing routines, and often leaving the house with your baby for one of the first times. One of the things I hear most often from parents before their session is:
“What if the baby cries?”
or
“What if everything feels chaotic?”
The truth is, newborn sessions are designed with all of that in mind.
At Wonderloves Photography, my approach to newborn photography near Tunbridge Wells is intentionally calm, slow, and completely baby-led. The experience matters just as much as the images themselves.
So if you’re wondering what actually happens during a newborn session, here’s a little look behind the scenes.
Arriving at the Studio
The moment you arrive so that everything feels calm.
There’s no bright flash setup, no loud environment, and no pressure to perform the second you walk through the door. Most parents arrive slightly flustered because, honestly, getting out of the house with a newborn is an achievement in itself.
The studio is kept relaxed and welcoming with soft music playing quietly in the background, natural light, and space for everyone to settle in slowly.
You’ll have time to feed baby, unpack bags, have some water, and simply breathe for a moment before we begin.
The Session Always Starts Slowly
One of the most important things to know is that there is absolutely no rush.
I never expect babies to “perform” for the camera. Some babies fall asleep quickly, some need extra cuddles, some want another feed ten minutes after arriving. All of that is normal.
I always allow plenty of time within the session so we can follow your baby’s pace rather than forcing a strict timeline.
Quite often, the first part of the session is simply allowing everyone’s nervous systems to slow down.
Family & Sibling Photos First
If older siblings are coming along, we usually begin with family and sibling photographs first.
This tends to work beautifully because younger children are naturally fresher and more engaged at the beginning of the session. It also means parents can relax knowing those important family images are already captured early on.
After sibling photos are finished, there’s flexibility for one parent to take toddlers for a walk, grab a snack, or head to a nearby café if needed. This keeps the environment calm and relaxed for baby while also making the experience much easier for little ones.
Feeding Breaks Are Completely Normal
One of the biggest worries new parents have is whether feeding will “interrupt” the session.
It won’t.
Feeding breaks are simply part of newborn photography. Whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle feeding, combination feeding, or simply stopping for extra cuddles, the session gently flows around your baby’s needs.
Some of the calmest and most meaningful moments often happen during these quieter pauses.
A Relaxed, Baby-Led Pace
My sessions are never about forcing complicated posing or rushing from setup to setup.
Instead, the focus is always connection:
the way your baby curls into your chest,
the tiny stretches,
the sleepy cuddles,
the way your family naturally settles together.
Everything is guided softly and naturally so the images still feel like you.
There’s No Pressure to Be “Perfect”
You do not need perfectly behaved children.
You do not need a perfectly settled baby.
You do not need to arrive feeling organised.
Newborn sessions are created for real families in a very tender season of life.
My role is not just to take photographs. It’s to create an environment where you feel looked after, supported, and able to slow down long enough to be present with your family.
Because years from now, I don’t just want you to love the images.
I want you to remember that you felt calm in the middle of a season that can otherwise feel like such a blur.
