How to Prepare Your Home for a Newborn Photoshoot | Tunbridge Wells Newborn Photographer
One of the biggest worries parents have before an in-home newborn session is whether their home is “photo ready.”
I promise, it does not need to look perfect.
Your newborn session is not about creating a showroom. It’s about preserving this season of your life in a way that feels calm, connected, and honest. The beauty of in-home newborn photography is that your images become deeply personal because they are created in the space where your family is settling into this new chapter together.
At Wonderloves Photography, my newborn sessions near Tunbridge Wells are designed to feel relaxed and completely baby-led, and a few small preparations beforehand can make the experience feel even smoother.
Here are my best tips for preparing your home for your newborn session.
You Do Not Need to Clean the Entire House
This is probably the most important thing to know.
During a newborn session, we usually only use one or two spaces with the best natural light. Often this is:
the master bedroom
the nursery
a living room near a large window
That means you do not need to spend days stress-cleaning the whole house while recovering with a newborn.
A quick tidy of the spaces we’re most likely to use is more than enough.
I often tell parents to simply remove:
phone chargers
water bottles
bright packaging
piles of laundry
tissues or baby wipes beside the bed
Small visual distractions make the biggest difference in photographs.
Natural Light Matters Most
Beautiful newborn photography is far more about light than the size or style of your home.
Even smaller homes can photograph beautifully when there is soft window light available.
Before your session, it can help to:
open blinds and curtains
let as much natural light in as possible
avoid turning on overhead orange lighting if you can
If I need to move a chair slightly closer to a window or shift something small, I’ll guide you through it gently during the session.
Warm the Home Slightly Beforehand
Babies are happiest when they’re warm and comfortable.
You do not need to turn your home into a sauna, but having the house slightly warmer than usual before I arrive can really help baby settle more easily.
I usually describe it as comfortable t-shirt weather.
Prepare Baby Before I Arrive
One of the biggest things that helps newborn sessions run smoothly is reducing unnecessary outfit changes for baby.
If possible, I recommend:
dressing baby only in a nappy and vest if you would like them photographed in the blanket
wrapping them warmly in a soft blanket
dressing them in their outfit you are wanting them to be photographed in
feeding them shortly before the session begins
This helps keep baby sleepy and settled rather than fully waking them with multiple clothing changes.
After feeding, holding baby upright on your chest for a little while can also help keep them calm, comfortable and bring up any uncomfortable wind.
Think Comfort Over Perfection
Your home does not need to look like a Pinterest board.
The most meaningful images are almost always the simplest ones:
feeding on the bed,
cuddles in the nursery,
holding baby near a window,
siblings climbing onto the couch beside you.
These moments are beautiful because they are real.
Preparing Siblings for the Session
If older siblings are part of the session, it helps to set gentle expectations beforehand.
I usually begin with family and sibling photographs first while little ones are still engaged and happy. After that, toddlers often benefit from a break or some quieter play while we focus on baby.
Having snacks, puzzles, colouring, or another calm activity nearby can help enormously.
And please don’t worry if children become noisy or restless. That’s completely normal and already expected. I have two very, very lively boys myself so am complete used to a slightly crazy house.
Don’t Worry About “Perfect” Behaviour
One of the things I always want parents to know is that newborn sessions are intentionally slow.
There’s space for:
feeding breaks
cuddles
nappy changes
unsettled moments
toddler interruptions
You do not need to apologise for your baby behaving like a baby.
The session gently flows around your family rather than expecting your family to perfectly perform for the session.
The Goal Is How It Felt
Years from now, your children will not notice whether there was washing folded in the next room.
What they’ll feel in these images is warmth, connection, closeness, and the atmosphere of those early days together.
That’s always the priority.
