When to Book Your Newborn Photoshoot. A Simple Guide for New Mums

I have received 3 enquiries for newborn photoshoots this week from first time mums who have just had their first baby so thought I should write about the best time to book a newborn photography shoot for all the first time mums.

A note to all readers. This is your session and I want us to create something together that works perfectly for you and gives you a gallery that you love.

Let’s run through the process so you feel prepared and confident.

When should you book your newborn photoshoot?

I would highly recommend booking your newborn photoshoot at the start of your second trimester, around week 14. This gives us time to plan your session properly and get organised in a way that feels calm and considered.

Newborn photoshoot sessions are my most booked, so the earlier you book, the more flexibility we have. It also means you can relax knowing everything is in place before your baby arrives.

What is the best time to have your newborn photoshoot?

The best time for your newborn photoshoot is within the first 4 weeks after your baby is born.

I recommend aiming for around week 3. By this point, you’ve had a little time to settle in and find your rhythm, but your baby is still very much in that new, sleepy stage.

What happens if your baby is early or late?

Babies rarely arrive exactly on time, and that’s completely fine.

Once your baby is here, we confirm your session date. If your baby is early or late, we simply move your booking. I keep space in my diary specifically for this, so your newborn photoshoot can still happen at the right time for you.

What do you wear for your newborn photoshoot?

Once you have booked your newborn photoshoot, I will send you a guide on what to wear so you don’t have to overthink it.

The aim is always to keep things simple, comfortable, and true to you.

How do you prepare your home for a newborn photoshoot?

You only need one small area of your home ready for your newborn photoshoot.

A clear corner with good natural light is perfect. There’s no need to prepare your entire home. This is about creating a relaxed space where you can focus on your baby and enjoy the experience.

How do you prepare yourself for the newborn photoshoot?

Preparation is simple and practical.

Book your hair appointment before your due date so it’s one less thing to think about. Choose a baby-friendly outfit in advance that is comfortable, loose around the middle, and easy for feeding.

Keep things natural. If nail maintenance isn’t your priority right now, simple and clean works perfectly.

What sessions are available for a newborn photoshoot?

I offer a few different options for your newborn photoshoot.

You can choose a more casual session that captures your whole world as it is right now, a more styled and edited session, or a mix of both.

Most families choose a mix. This gives you a beautiful image for announcements or gifts, along with a full gallery that takes you back to this moment in time.

How long does a newborn photoshoot take?

Your newborn photoshoot is completely baby-led.

I allow the whole morning, but most sessions are finished within 1.5 to 2 hours. This gives us time for feeding, changing, settling your baby, and those quiet in-between moments.

There is no rush. The experience should feel calm and easy.

Do you travel for newborn photoshoots?

Yes, I travel for newborn photoshoots across Kent, London, and Sydney, Australia.

When will you receive your newborn photos?

You will receive your gallery of beautiful newborn photos within 14 days of your session.

This is where everything comes together. A collection of images that reflects this time in a way that feels real, calm, and completely yours.
